Fat dog stuns owners by losing more than 100lbs when vet refused to put him down

An overweight dog's owners told the vet to put him down because of his obesity, but the vet refused and instead took him into the shelter – and now the pooch has lost more than 100lbs.

Weighing in at 173lbs when he was taken to the vets, golden retriever Kai was so fat that he could barely stand on his own.

But after the vets refused to put him down, he was adopted by a kind-hearted woman who changed his life for the better.

The Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue took Kai in and matched her up with foster owner Pam Heggie, who became so besotted with the animal that she ended up keeping him.

Thanks to a strict diet and exercise regiment, Kai has now lost 105lbs and is now less than half the dog he used to be.

From struggling to walk, Kai now runs after his ball, jumps over logs in the woods and loves going to the park for his walkies.

“He was a rescue surrendered to Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue," his owner told Bored Panda. "He was taken in to be put down by his previous owners due to obesity.

"He was 173lbs when he was taken in, and his mobility was very limited. He now weighs 68lbs and is healthy and active. I fostered him then ended up keeping him.”

Golden retrievers usually weigh from 55 to 75 pounds and will usually eat as much as their owners give them.

After losing 100 pounds, Kai became a certified therapy dog and started doing hospital visits.

He now also has a new foster brother called Woody, who weighed in at a whopping 209lbs last month and is now looking to copy Kai's weight loss success.

The pair are now social media stars and have 23,800 followers on Facebook.

In one post, the page says: "Hello my name is Kai! I was dropped off at a vet clinic and asked by my previous owners to be put down because I was 173 pounds and couldn’t move well. @misfitsofalberta.animalrescue found me a foster mom (who became my forever mom) who helped me drop 100 pounds. I hope my journey inspires you to never give up!"

And Kai's newfound fame has led to him even getting recognised when he's out in his home town in Edmonton, Canada.

“Probably once or twice a week somebody says, ‘Oh, is this Kai?' Or 'I’ve seen him online but I’ve never got to meet him',” Pam told Global News. “He’s a pretty popular guy.”

The dog that could . Heggie has started taking him to a bigger dog park.

“He is truly the happiest dog in the world,” said Heggie. “I haven’t lost an ounce, but he’s done remarkably well. He is a totally different dog now.”

“That in itself is a miracle,” said Dr. Jared Lawrence, Kai’s veterinarian. “I think in general Kai’s prognosis is really good.”
