A large blaze is currently being battled by fire crews at a scrapyard near London City Airport.

Witnesses nearby say they can see the thick black smoke billowing in the air.

The flames, believed to be part of a scrapyard on Thames Road near Pontoon Dock, have been ongoing since the late hours last night, (Wednesday, May 5).

Photographs from the scene show a large fire near containers at a yard next to the River Thames in the Newham area.

At least two fire teams have been dispatched to the incident with an aerial ladder being used as part of the battle.

Residents say they can see and smell the smoke from miles away in Barking and East London.

People have taken to social media to discuss the smoke and fire visible in the distance.

London Fire Brigrade have tweeted that ten engines and around 70 firefighters have scrambled to the industrial estate.

They said: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a fire at an industrial estate on Thames Road in #Newham"
