A tanning salon owner says she’s ‘truly disgusted’ after a customer urinated on a sun bed at her shop in Lees, Oldham.

The customer visited Odelle Burney's shop in Lees, Oldham, Greater Manchester, for six minutes for a quick tanning session on one of the available sun beds.

It was only after they had left, and an employee went to use the same sunbed, that staff discovered it had been urinated over.

Odelle told Manchester Evening News: “A staff member slipped on the mat because it was so wet… noticing the smell.

“To wee on a sunbed with the electricity and high voltage is pretty crazy to me – why do people think it’s acceptable to do that?”

The salon had to replace all the mats on the sun bed and close the tanning room for sanitisation.

However, this is not the first time that the salon has experienced such an accident.

The recent urination is one in a string of five incidents carried out by different customers since Odelle took over the shop 10 years ago.

She added: “It’s crazy, I don’t know what it is but it appears to be quite a common thing in sunbed shops.

“Maybe it’s just from people coming in from the cold and then the heat hits them and they can’t control their bladder, but it’s definitely not the first time it’s happened – we’ve had about five incidents in 10 years.”

The Tanning Room does not have onsite customer toilets but Odelle insists she would have allowed the customer to use the staff toilets in an emergency.

She said: “We have a staff toilet and we’ll let customers use it for medical reasons or if there’s an emergency, but we’re also opposite a library that has a public toilet.

“It’s not like there weren’t any options.”

The perpetrator was caught on CCTV and the salon has said they’re prepared to confront them about the damage if they do re-emerge.

Odelle added: “Obviously if she comes back in again, I’m going to have to pull her to one side and bar her.

“I kind of hope she doesn’t come back as it avoids me the embarrassment of having to do that.”
