Furious Brexiteers are poised to call a vote of no confidence in May

Furious Brexiteers are poised to call an ‘imminent’ vote of no confidence in Theresa May over her Brexit deal as fresh letters are sent in to trigger crunch leadership ballot

  • Brexiteers said to be ready to send letters demanding a vote of no confidence
  • Patience may have run out in the Prime Minister after her Brexit deal emerged
  • But there have been rumours for months about a contest but none happened

Furious Brexiteers are ready to launch a no confidence vote in Theresa May in protest at the ‘betrayal’ in her draft EU deal.

For the first time members of the hardline European Research Group led by Jacob Rees-Mogg are warning the Prime Minister she has run out of time.

A vote will be called if 48 Tory MPs send letters to Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers.

Rumours have swirled for months that Sir Graham was close to the threshold but no contest has ever emerged.

But sources tonight said a no confidence vote was ‘imminent’ but plans to trigger the challenge tonight have been ‘disrupted by Cabinet chaos’.

An ex-minister told MailOnline: ‘I think a few people are holding off, will read the deal, square off their associations this weekend, then put in a letter.’

Brexiteer MP Conor Burns told LBC: ‘There’s a lot of febrile talk. What I can tell you is there’s no orchestrated attempt to put letters in.

‘But sensing the levels of frustration and annoyance colleagues are feeling it would not surprise me if organically letters are going in.’

He added: ‘Anybody looking in could rightly conclude that most people are appalled at the mess we are in.

‘This is an embarrassment for Britain. It’s an embarrassment for us all.’

He told the PM: ‘If media reports about the EU agreement are in any way accurate, you are not delivering on the Brexit people voted for and today you will lose the support of many Conservative MPs and millions of voters around the country.’

If a vote is called and Mrs May wins another contest cannot be called for 12 months – potentially giving her much needed breathing space.

If she loses the vote, it will trigger an immediate leadership contest to replace her.
