Girl, 7, dressed as bumblebee shot in chest while trick-or-treating on Halloween

A seven-year-old girl dressed as a bumblebee for Halloween was reportedly shot in the chest while trick-or-treating in Chicago on Thursday night.

The youngster was collecting sweets with a man in his early 30s when a group of men opened fire on the pair in the city’s Little Village neighbourhood at about 5.30pm, according to The Chicago Tribune.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Chicago police don’t believe she was the intended target, a spokesman said.

In a tweet, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the girl was believed to be an unintended victim.

He said members of the community were assisting investigators “but we need more.”

The man she was trick-or-treating with was hit in the hand and is in stable condition, the Tribune reported.

Witness Lali Lara told the newspaper the girl’s father screamed: “My little girl’s been shot!”

It’s unclear if the 31-year-old man was the girl’s dad.

Lara said she aided the little girl until an ambulance arrived.

“I was pressing on her and calling her name,” she told local news.

“She was looking at me, and I was calling her name.

Police said a group of males were chasing another male along the street when someone in the group fired at the intended victim.

It was not immediately known if the wounded man was with the girl or was the one targeted by the shooters.

Police say they have no description of the gunman.

“This is unacceptable,” police Sgt. Rocco Alioto said. “A 7-year-old girl that was trick-or-treating with her family had to get shot because a group of guys want to shoot at another male.”

He called the violence a "senseless incident."

Police are investigating and there were no immediate arrests.

It comes as Halloween horror struck in the UK last night, when a man was reportedly shot in the face before the car he was travelling in rammed into a 12-year-old girl in Liverpool.
