A Google Maps user has been left bewildered after he spotted a Red Lobster restaurant listing on the island of South Sentinel.

South Sentinel is an uninhabited island in the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean, which lies just to the south of North Sentinel Island, which is home to the Sentinelese people – the world's most isolated tribe.

The Sentinelese are an indigenous people in voluntary isolation who have defended, often by force, their protected isolation from the outside world.

Outsiders aren't permitted to get within five nautical miles of North Sentinel, in order to prevent the resident tribespeople from contracting diseases to which they have no acquired immunity.

Despite nominally belonging to India, the Indian authorities recognise the islanders' desire to be left alone and restrict their role to remote monitoring and don't prosecute locals for killing people, such as with the death of American missionary John Allen Chau.

The Google Maps discovery was uploaded by Reddit user tenacB and has left several users in disbelief as it suggests that an American seafood restaurant chain has managed to open a branch on a tiny uninhabited island located next to an island that houses the world's most isolated tribe.

User tenacB wrote: "The uninhabited southern sister island of the most isolated tribe on earth," with over 800 people 'up-voting' the post.

One fellow user commented, "I mean I wouldn't be surprised if there really was a Red Lobster there", while another replied, "I would think McDonald's would get there first."

A third user said: "I am sure they love seafood."

In 2018, the Indian Government excluded South Sentinel from the Restricted Area Permit, to allow researchers and anthropologists with pre-approved clearance to visit.
