Hangover cure breakthrough as scientists claim 13p pill stops headaches

Boffins claim to have found the long-awaited cure for pesky morning hangovers in the form of a 15p tablet.

Researchers have published a study that shows alcohol-related side effects such as headaches and nausea can be reduced by an amino acid tablet called L-cysteine.

Drinkers will be overjoyed by the news having had to rely on homemade remedies and ban legends to power through the morning after.

Hungover Brits tend to rely on "sweating it out", guzzling coffee or even the "hair of the dog" and start drinking again.

But scientists in Finland say they have had a real breakthrough and the cure could be available for just 15p.

Researchers tested the tablet on a group of men who were ordered to drink alcohol for several hours on six different occasions.

Men given the pill reported fewer hangover symptoms compared to the blokes given a placebo, results showed.

And L-cysteine tablets can be bought for £15 per pack of 100, according to Mail Online, the equivalent of 15p per tablet.

The paper said: "L-cysteine prevents or alleviates hangover, nausea, headache, stress and anxiety. For hangover, nausea and headache the results were apparent with the L-cysteine dose of 1200 mg and for stress and anxiety already with the dose of 600 mg.

"L-cysteine would reduce the need for drinking the next day with no or fewer hangover symptoms: nausea, headache, stress and anxiety.

"Altogether, these effects of L-cysteine are unique and seem to have a future in preventing or alleviating these harmful symptoms as well as reducing the risk of alcohol addiction."

The survey was funded by Catapult Cat Oy, which sells L-cysteine supplements, according to newswire Bloomberg.

It required two dozen volunteers between 21 and 60-years-old – and they had to be experienced with hangovers.

Some participants were ruled out because they couldn’t keep up with the drinking so only data for 19 men was used for the research.

Each participant was given 1.5g of alcohol for every kilogram they weighed so they all had the same amount of booze relative to their size.

In the morning, the drinkers expressed their degree of hangover, nausea, headache and anxiety on a scale of zero to 10, and of stress from zero to 4.

According to the study results, L-cysteine was found to have reduced or eliminated hangover symptoms of nausea, headache, stress and anxiety to a "statistically significant level".

Scientists admitted it is not clear how the tablets alleviated the hangover symptoms but it will still be a boost for boozing Brits.

They claimed that because people would be less hungover, they wouldn't reach for the bottle again.

The paper stated: "The fact of the matter is that higher degree of alcohol-related hangover and stress symptoms lead to more effort "curing" the aftereffects by drinking alcohol.

"This is especially the case with individuals with a predisposition for developing alcohol addiction."

L-cysteine is often sold as a dietary supplement for its protein-making benefits and effect on metabolism.
