Jetway collapses at Baltimore-Washington International Airport
A jetway collapsed at Baltimore-Washington International Airport Saturday night, sending passengers hurtling to the ground and injuring six.
The injured had been exiting a plane via the jetway — the enclosed passageway connecting an airport gate and their plane. They were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, officials said.
CBS Baltimore quoted passengers on the plane saying a woman had fallen ill on the Southwest Airlines flight from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
They said the jetway collapsed as medics were escorting her off.
“As they got her, she’s walking out, we heard this incredibly loud bang, it was just deafening. And then the thing crashed,’’ passenger William Yerman told the station.
Michelle Yerman said, “It was very scary that it collapsed with people on it, and they took a big spill onto the concrete.”
The rest of the passengers used the plane’s staircase to exit.
