Justice Anthony Kennedy to retire from US Supreme Court

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced Wednesday that he will step down from the bench on July 31 — giving President Donald Trump another opportunity to nominate another conservative jurist.

“It has been the greatest honor and privilege to serve our nation in the federal judiciary for 43 years, 30 of those years on the Supreme Court,” he said in a statement.

The President Ronald Reagan appointee, 81, has been on the high court since 1988, and was famed for frequently being a swing vote in 5-4 decisions on the deeply divided court.

The announcement came on the last day of the court’s current session.
