Members of the public challenged the suspect in North Kilworth, Leics, at 9am.

They wrestled the weapon from his hand before he fled.

The drama unfolded close to St Andrew's primary school – although it is understood no threats were made to the school or its pupils.

Leicestershire Police said: "We were called at approximately 9am to reports of a man with what was believed to be a knife in South Kilworth Road.

"The man was challenged by a group of members of the public who removed the knife from him and handed it in to a safe place.

"Officers attended and following inquiries a man was arrested  at an address nearby."
