Prince Harry and Meghan Markle didn’t choose the moment to go public with their relationship – it was actually a leak from another royal household, it has been claimed.
According to new book Finding Freedom, the pair were forced to make the announcement because of an employee in Princess Eugenie and Prince Andrew's household.
Authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim in their book: "The Sunday Express was going to run with the story of their relationship – and the tabloid was rumoured to have been tipped off by an employee of none other than Eugenie and her father, Prince Andrew."
The leak would have been very hard for Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie, who had enjoyed a close friendship since childhood.
“Out of all the queen's grandchildren, Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry have one of the most natural connections,” say Scobie and Durand.
“Like Harry, Eugenie is loyal, honest and great fun. The two had many nights out together in London, sneaking into back entrances of clubs.”
Eugenie had even set Harry up with her friend Cressida Bonas.
A descendant of King Charles II, actress Cressida was once hotly tipped to be Harry’s future bride but it was not to be and the pair broke it off in 2014.
Queen's closest aide 'very upset' about Meghan Markle tiara row claims
Harry continued to take love life advice from his cousin.
“Harry had always confided in his cousin when it came to the women in his life,” Scobie and Durand say in the book.
“Not only did he trust her implicitly, but friends said that she gives great advice and has always been 'beyond wise' for her years.
"It's not surprising then that Eugenie was one of the first in the family to know about his relationship with Meghan.”
But someone within Eugenie or Prince Andrew's circle spilled the beans to a reporter, it is claimed.
Harry and Meghan had only told family and their closest friends – even ordering takeaways from their favourite restaurants rather than going out so they could get to know each other out of the glare of the spotlight.
But on October 31, 2016, they couldn't hide it any more when news of their relationship was leaked.
The tables were turned on Eugenie’s wedding day, according to the book, when Meghan revealed her pregnancy.
It claims in the book: “A source said Eugenie told friends she felt the couple should have waited to share the news."
