Meghan Markle ‘should have gone to psychiatrist not Oprah’, claims Royal expert

Meghan Markle upset people and wasn't "as charming as she seemed" after joining the Royal Family, a royal expert has said.

The Duchess of Sussex should have gone to a psychiatrist instead of Oprah after becoming suicidal, said Penny Junor.

The royal biographer told a new ITV documentary: "I was appalled by the Oprah interview.

"These are not statements that should be made for public consumption.

"This is the sort of thing that should happen in the privacy of a psychiatrist’s couch."

The duchess, 39, told Oprah Winfrey that she wasn't given the help she needed when she became suicidal after marrying Prince Harry.

This was among bombshell criticisms of the Royal Family made by the pair on the TV chat show earlier this year – after quitting the Firm and moving to their £11m Montecito mansion in California.

But Ms Junor, who was speaking on the documentary, Harry and William: What Went Wrong, said: "I was hearing very bad stories from early on that Meghan was upsetting people."

She went on to say that the Duchess's approach was "showbiz-y, celebrity", the Sun reported, and added: "Our royal family are not celebrities.

"They are working members of a public institution."

The couple quit the Royal Family and began a new life in the US before making sensational claims in an Oprah interview earlier this year that rocked the establishment.

In the same documentary the writer said: "Someone close to William told me William felt from an early stage that Meghan had an agenda."

It comes after reports that Prince Harry will return to the UK soon for another memorial event to honour Princess Diana.
