Meghan Markle won’t be British citizen for several years despite marrying prince
Meghan Markle is now officially a member of our royal family and she’s been give the official title HRH The Duchess of Sussex.
But despite her fancy new name, the American actress won’t actually be a British citizen for several years.
Meghan has been granted Leave to Remain, an immigration status which means there’s no time limit on her stay in the country and she’s allowed to work and study without any restrictions.
However getting citizenship is a bit more complicated.
Kensington Palace has said Meghan will go through the normal visa process like everyone else.
A spokesman said: "Ms. Markle has taken full legal advice on her right to remain in the UK and will be fully compliant with all requirements at all times. She will go through the normal visa process.
"Ms. Markle intends to become a British citizen going through the normal process, which will take a number of years."
The palace would not comment on whether Meghan is being given any special treatment because she is now a royal.
According to the government’s website, there are a number of criteria you must meet in order to apply to become a citizen.
- You must be over 18
- You must be of good character
- You’ll have to continue living in the UK
- You’ll have to prove you have a good knowledge of English
- You must have lived in the UK for five years before the Home Office gets your application.
- You can’t have spent more than 450 days outside of the UK in those five years
You must not have broken any immigration laws while you were in the UK.
Meghan has given up her job as an actress and will take up royal duties alongside her new husband.
Like her sister-in-law Kate, she will probably do lots of charity work with causes close to her heart.
Meghan officially became a member of the royal family on Saturday when she married Prince Harry at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.
Millions of people around the world tuned in to watch the ceremony and thousands lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the happy couple.
After the service they took a carriage ride around the town before heading to a reception hosted by the Queen.
Prince Charles hosted an evening reception at Frogmore House for more than 200 guests where friends and family partied until the early hours.
