Scorching 30C heat has gripped Britain over the past few days, triggering an extreme heatwave warning from the Met Office. Now the forecasters have issued thunderstorm warnings for much of the UK, which “may cause impacts to travel and power supplies”.
The Met Office writes: “Although many places will miss them, some thunderstorms are likely to develop during Tuesday afternoon and evening, bringing torrential rain, frequent lightning, large hail and gusty winds.
“These thunderstorms could produce 30-60 mm of rain within one to two hours.”
The warnings are for the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England and the West Midlands.
The warnings come into force at 1pm today and last until 11.59pm tonight.
