Michelle Obama fury: Ex-FLOTUS savaged for ‘endorsing Trump economy’ in ticket price row

The ex-FLOTUS is about to set out on a multi-city tour where she will give talks to crowds of thousands of people. The tour, Becoming: An Intimate Conversation, has been attracting attention not for its contents but for the price tag that comes along with a ticket.

On a segment of Fox and Friends, co-host Jedediah Bila said: “Former first lady Michelle Obama heading to New Jersey as part of her Becoming: An Intimate Conversation multi-city tour, and it isn’t cheap.”

This rang true when infographics revealed the prices of admission: a floor ticket will set those wishing to attend back a huge $1,300 (£1,050) while the most expensive tickets, known as the ‘suite’ tickets, cost a staggering $4,200 (£3,300).

The steep prices led political commentator and US Governor, Mike Huckabee, to draw attention to how people could afford the prices in the first place.

Talking Fox News, Mr Huckabee, who previously served as the 44th governor of Arkansas from 1996 to 2007, praised Ms Obama for her money-making enterprise and entrepreneurship, admitting that her tour proved that Donald Trump was doing something right for the US economy.

He said: “I’m going to be very clear about this: good for Michelle Obama. She is practicing capitalism in the private sector and I say why the heck not.

“My speeches never get $4,200 a ticket, but for $4.20 I’ll speak in a Holiday Inn breakfast room and everybody just has to share their eggs and biscuits with me. That’s all they gotta do.

“Seriously, why not? Why shouldn’t she go out there? But it’s a ringing endorsement for the Trump economy because now there are a lot more people who can afford those tickets than could when her husband was president.”

Ms Bila went on to talk about the “force” of Ms Obama and her being a perfect face for the Democratic Party considering she “has such a likability, she’s so popular with so many people”.

The co-host then went on to ask Mr Huckabee if he thought the ex-FLOTUS will be making an appearance during the 2020 campaign.

Ms Bila said: “Let’s say it’s Joe Biden, I almost feel like it might be more valuable to have her front and centre than to even have President Obama front and centre for him.”

Mr Huckabee responded by admitting his “greatest fear” is that the Democrats will realise they have no serious candidate to stand again Trump and then they’ll “bring her out and she becomes the candidate”.

He said: “That would be a concern because she is immensely popular, she’s very articulate, and frankly in person, she’s a very charming individual.

“I think she would be that candidate that would scare the daylights out of everybody.”

Ms Bila responded with a simple: “I agree.”

The Governor’s comments come following several media reports of Ms Obama’s ticket prices for her tour.

According to the New York Post, the cheapest seats for the tour can be found on Ticketmaster for $144 (£115).

Though cheaper, this doesn’t distract from the fact that some tickets were reported to cost $1,300 (£1,050) rising to $4,200 (£3,300).

Last week, it was reported Ms Obama’s speech had been copied by current FLOTUS, Melania Trump.

Sarah Hurwitz, Michelle Obama’s former speechwriter, revealed that she had been informed of the current FLOTUS’ plagiarism of work intended for Ms Obama.

The alleged ripping-off came in a 2016 speech in which Melania addressed the Republican National Convention.

The phrases used in the speech were almost identical to the words used by Ms Hurwitz when she helped Michelle write her presentation to the Democratic National Convention in 2008.

When Ms Hurwitz was notified to the similarity bordering on repetition, she said her first reaction was: “Oh. God.”

She said: “Making that kind of mistake is every speechwriter’s worst nightmare.”
