Mom fatally shot trying to stop suicidal daughter: cops
A Texas mom was killed when she tried to prevent her 26-year-old daughter from committing suicide and a struggle ensued, authorities said.
Esperanza Escamilla, 45, was fatally shot in the chest May 1 at her Corpus Christi home as she tried to wrestle a gun from her suicidal daughter, The Caller Times reported.
Police said that her daughter, Serena Escamilla, was upset over a breakup and threatened suicide before the deadly incident.
She allegedly told her mother that she “wanted to shoot herself” earlier in the day.
The pair reportedly began fighting over the weapon, which fired and struck the mother’s chest and the daughter in the stomach.
Officers were called to the scene on a report that a woman “had shot herself and her mother accidentally,” according to the police.
They arrived to find the younger Escamilla bleeding from the torso near her mother. The mom was rushed to the hospital, where she later died of her injuries.
The 26-year-old woman was also treated at the hospital. She was released after a week and then arrested on suspicion of murder.
She remains in custody at Nueces County Jail where her bail is set at $500,000.
