Motorist is arrested on suspicion of drug driving after telling police he crashed his car after ‘swerving to avoid an octopus’

 A motorist told police that he crashed his car after ‘swerving to avoid an octopus’.

Devon and Cornwall Police said on Facebook that it has arrested a man ‘on suspicion of drug driving this evening after a collision near South Milton in Devon just before 7pm. 

The man, whose car ended up overturned on the A381, is now in police custody.

In a post Kingsbridge Police said: ‘Emergency services are currently dealing with a single vehicle RTC on the A381 by the South Milton turn where a car has overturned.

Kingsbridge Police reported the crash on its Facebook page.  The man has now been arrested on suspicion of drug driving

‘The driver stated he swerved to avoid an octopus. He is currently in custody on suspicion of drug driving.’ 

A police spokesperson told DevonLive that the crash had occurred between Salcombe and Kingsbridge. 

The police’s Facebook post was met with a series of hilarious responses.

The crash was reported by roads monitoring service Inrix which said that the road was closed following the incident but reopened again around 6.40pm.

An Inrix’s read: ‘Overturned car removed on A381 Salcombe Road between Burleigh Lane (Woolston) and Higher Town (Malborough).Affecting traffic travelling between Salcombe and Kingsbridge.’
