Mum’s ‘fairy tale ripped apart’ as partner kills baby son over pizza order error

A mother says she has been 'haunted forever' after her partner shook their six-month-old baby to death after his pizza order was wrong.

Evander Wilson went "into some sort of rage" after he discovered a bottle of soft drink was missing from his fast-food order during lockdown in Australia.

The dad saw red and brutally attacked Chelsea Smith in front of their two children in the lounge of their Mildura home in Victoria before he murdered his youngest child Jakobi on April 11, 2020.

It was reported that he violently grabbed Smith by the hair and dragged her across the room before punching her in the ribs and stomach, reports the NZ Herald.

Smith tried to console his son Jakobi who was crying while sitting in his car seat, but he continued to sob.

He refused to hand his son back to Smith before he shook him, bounced him up and down on his legs without head support, which eventually led to him hitting his head on his knee.

The baby was still crying when the father put him back in his car seat but he suddenly went quiet before his eyes shut.

Wilson then picked his son up "gently" and apologised to his son by saying "Daddy's sorry".

But the helpless baby went limp and saw colour fade from his entire body which is when Smith desperately phoned for an ambulance.

Medics rushed to the scene and tried to save Jakobi who would "gasp for air" every now and then, Justice Elizabeth Hollingwood told the Supreme Court.

But despite their efforts, the baby was pronounced dead 45 minutes later at Mildura Base Hospital.

Examinations later revealed that he died from trauma to the head.

But it took more than two weeks for his mother to pluck up the courage and tell police what happened to her son that night which led to Wilson's arrest in June 2020.

The dad pleaded guilty to child homicide but had previously claimed that it was Smith's fault that their baby was dead.

It was also reported that he sent a string of threatening text messages where he said he would hurt her once he got out of prison.

The mum said: "I was so scared that I was going to have flashbacks and nightmares of the night I lost my son.

"The night I lost Jakobi will haunt me forever.

"My fairytale of being a family has been ripped apart."

It was reported that the pair were not handling Victoria's first lockdown well and that Wilson had taken to drugs as a way to cope with the strain.

Justice Hollingworth accepted that he made a genuine effort to save his son and his intention was not to hurt him.

Wilson was sentenced to eight years and six months behind bars, with a non-parole period of five years and six months.
