Naked woman trapped in storm drain rescued after cries heard underground

A naked woman was rescued from a storm drain after a passer-by heard crying from under their feet.

Authorities are trying to discover how a naked woman came to be trapped in a roadside storm drain for days.

The pedestrian told Police that they looked in the drain after hearing crying when they saw a human figure and raised the alarm.

Local 10 reports the South Florida woman is now recovering in hospital after being found naked and stuck in the drain.

She had been reported missing three weeks ago from another county that was many miles away.

Delray Beach Police Department Public Information Officer Ted White said: “This was by far one of the most bizarre incidents that our officers have responded to.”

She was eventually rescued from the eight-foot deep drain near the intersection of Atlantic Boulevard and Southwest 11th Avenue on Tuesday morning.

Dani Moschella with Delray Beach Fire Rescue told the station: “A passerby heard something coming from the storm drain. She heard a woman yelling.

“They did in fact, to their surprise, find a woman stuck in that storm drain.”

Delray Beach Fire’s Special Operations Team was able to remove the storm grate, lower down a ladder and hoist the woman up.

“She was unable to stand up,” Moschella said. “She didn’t have any clothes on. She was very dirty. She had some superficial wounds. Her knees were all scraped up.”

Authorities told the channel they are not yet sure how she got into the storm drain or how long she was down there.

“It appears she may have been in that storm drain for at least a couple of days, perhaps longer,” White said.

The woman was taken to Delray Medical Center to be treated for her injuries and to check on her health.

While police said there are still many unanswered questions, they are just fortunate a woman found in an area no human should be was found alive.

“To think of a person down there for any amount of time is terrifying,” Moschella said.

Delray Beach police believe the woman may have disappeared on March 3 – which was when she was reported missing.

They are currently working on confirming that information with investigators.
