People claim lottery was fixed after numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 drawn

A number of people have accused the South Africa Lottery of fraud after 20 people won a share of the jackpot.

The draw on Tuesday incredibly saw the numbers five, six, seven, eight and nine come up – with a ‘PowerBall’ of 10.

Organisers were quick to say many players pick that combination of numbers, but an investigation into the lottery is underway.

South Africa Lottery said on Tuesday: ‘Congratulations to tonight’s 20 winners of PowerBall draw.

‘These numbers may be unexpected but we see many players opt to play these sequences.’

The 20 winners won 5.7 million rand – equivalent to £278,000 – each.

It’s reportedly very rare for several winners to share a jackpot of that size.

This is the number of different combinations when selecting five balls from a set of 50, plus an additional bonus ball from a pool of 20.

South Africans took to social media yesterday to allege the results was a fix.

One person tweeted: ‘Lotto exposing themselves that they are a scam.’

Another said: ’20 people discussed this and shared that jackpot equally. Absolutely no way in hell that’s a coincidence.’

South Africa’s National Lotteries Commission said it would investigate the draw following the result, which it called unprecedented.
