President Macron and his wife attend Bastille Day celebrations

Stunning tricolor fly-past in Paris as President Emmanuel Macron and his wife join the crowds to mark Bastille Day celebrations more than 200 years since the start of the French Revolution

  • French President and wife Brigitte attended the country’s biggest national holiday today in the capital city
  • Military aircrafts flew the colours of the national flag over the Champs-Élysées and troops proudly marched
  • The annual holiday celebrates the storming of the Bastille fort in 1789 which sparked the French Revolution

Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte watched Bastille Day celebrations in Paris today as the city marked the country’s biggest national holiday.

The annual ceremony marks the storming of the Bastille, a fortress in the capital used by the French monarchy as a political prison, in July 1789, sparking the French Revolution.

And today, more than 200 years later, the Macrons watched as troops marched down the Champs-Élysées and military aircrafts flew the Tricolore over the Louvre Museum’s pyramid.

They held hands and laughed together before proudly standing to watch French troops file down the famous French avenue in the centre of Paris.

The parade is the largest and oldest regular military parade in all of Europe and is attended by foreign ambassadors and other dignitaries.

Not everything went to plan during the striking demonstration, with two police motorcycles of the Republican Guard crashing into each other.
