Royals ‘dreading’ Prince Harry’s book after he kept ‘controversial’ title secret

The Royal Family are said to be "dreading" the release of Prince Harry's upcoming memoir after he kept its title a secret from them.

Yesterday (Thursday, October 27), publishers Penguin Random House confirmed the Duke of Sussex's book is titled "Spare" and will be released on January 10, 2023.

The book's website promises that the "landmark publication" will be "raw" with "unflinching honesty" as Harry offers "insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief".

The title is in reference to 'the heir and the spare', a term used to describe the roles of the elder and younger children of a monarch.

According to the Daily Mail, royal sources said Harry's family were not warned about the "controversial" and "provocative" title ahead of yesterday's announcement.

"That title is loaded and it does not bode well," a source said.

The publication also claimed the Royal Household has been warned that the 416-page, £28 book is "critical of everyone and everything".

The Firm is said to be "dreading" its release.

Palace aides have reportedly said no members of the Royal Household will get a chance to read Spare before January 10, meaning that King Charles may learn of its contents at the same time as everyone else.

Spare was initially set to be released before Christmas this year, but was delayed after the Queen's death with reports suggesting that her passing prompted Harry to rework some sections.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Star that the title "sounds bitter" and is likely bad news for the King.

He said it "implies the author feels in the shadow of an elder brother and may well give details".

"This bodes ill as does the timing so early in King Charles' reign for any reconciliation with the Royal Family. It sounds bitter," he added

"This is a book that should never have been published and the title bodes ill, as do the 'raw' and 'unflinching' details promised."
