Southampton Red Funnel ferry collides with motorboat in Solent injuring two

Two people were injured when a ferry collided with a motorboat in the Southampton Solent this afternoon.

The crash happened at around 4.40pm, leaving two people on the smaller vessel in need of medical attention.

The ferry was operated by Red Funnel, which has launched an investigation.

A spokesman from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution RNLI said a crew had been called out from nearby Calshot.

He told Mirror Online: "It was a collision between a 31ft motor yacht that was going from Southampton to Cowes and a ferry which was also going from Southampton to Cowes.

"The yacht suffered quite severe damage. There were three people onboard, and there was potential engine failure.

"Two people were injured, one suffered a minor head injury while another had an injury to their hand from glass.

"Both were treated by the ambulance service."

In a statement Red Funnel said: "We can confirmed that our vehicle ferry Red Falcon was involved in an incident with a motorboat at approximately 16:40 this afternoon (29 September) whilst approaching East Cowes.

"Red Falcon sustained no damage and no one was injured on the ferry. All appropriate external agencies have been contacted.

"The safety of its passengers, crew and other marine users is Red Funnel’s highest priority and this incident will be fully investigated"
