Wife jailed in UAE for ‘looking at husband’s phone and laughing with siblings’

A wife has been jailed for three months in the United Arab Emirates for allegedly looking at her husband’s phone and laughing at the contents with her siblings.

The unnamed woman was locked up for scrolling through the device while her husband slept and transferring pictures and messages to her own phone, according to reports.

She is then said to have mockingly shown the files to her siblings, much to her partner’s rage.

The woman claimed she had permission to check her husband’s phone ever since she caught him chatting to other women.

But police were called when her husband realised he had been ‘taken advantage of’.

The crime of misuse of digital information to invade privacy in the UAE is punishable by up to six months behind bars or a fine of up to £100,000.

She was jailed in the Ras Al Khaimah, the most northerly of the Emirates, according to the Khaleej Times .

The UAE is known internationally for its strict laws, particularly covering marriage and relationships.
