An American woman was detained in the Philippines after she was caught with a six-day-old baby in her carry-on luggage.
Philippines officials said Jennifer Talbot, 43, was arrested early Wednesday morning at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila.
Talbot was reportedly traveling though terminal 3, on her way to a flight to the US, when police found the infant inside her bag during a security screening.
According to CNN Philippines, Talbot claimed the baby was her nephew, but had no documentation to prove it.
The Philippines Immigration Bureau (PIB) said: ‘The infant was hidden in the oversized belt bag and (she) did no declare nor present to the the immigration inspector during departure formalities.
Grafton Medina, a spokesperson from the Nation Bureau of Investigation, told NBC that Talbot was planning to board a Delta Airlines flight to Detroit, then had plans to travel to Columbus, Ohio.
PIB Spokesman, Melvin Mabulac, said Talbot was traveling alone and had a passport for herself, but not the infant.
Medina said: ‘She would not have a baby in a hand-carry to be x-rayed. But she hid it at check-in and when she passed immigration counters, and then at the other x-ray to the boarding gate, then she showed it.’
‘That’s the time we were able to apprehend her when she passed through the next x-ray.’
Talbot has asked to speak with the US Embassy before she is questioned by Philippines officials.
On Thursday, the National Bureau of Investigation said Talbot presented documentation from the baby’s mother, Maricris Dulap, giving permission for the newborn to travel to the US, but it had not been signed.
Investigators are now searching for Dulap and the baby’s father, who have been charged with child abuse.
