Sharon O’Donoghue (pictured outside Birmingham Crown Court yesterday) had been on board a flight from Hurghada in Egypt on March 12 which had 218 passengers and two infants
A woman abused fellow passengers and was aggressive towards cabin crew on a Birmingham-bound plane after drinking a quarter of a bottle of rum.
Her ‘appalling’ behaviour reduced one elderly lady to tears.
Sharon O’Donoghue had been on board a flight from Hurghada in Egypt on March 12 which was carrying 218 adult passengers and two infants.
She had initially been served a glass of wine during bar service, had appeared perfectly genial and was exchanging pleasantries with others.
There was then a duty-free service and O’Donoghue bought two one-litre bottles of Bacardi rum.
When there was a second bar service she asked for more wine but at this stage a member of the cabin crew thought she was drunk because she was stumbling.
The crew member also noticed that one of the bottles had been opened and a quarter of it was gone.
She spoke to her manager and, when they asked O’Donoghue whether she had drunk the rum, she replied: ‘No, I have spilled it on my bad foot.’
Richard Franck, prosecuting at Birmingham Crown Court, said the woman then started to become aggressive, asking the manager whether she spoke Arabic or Turkish – and then replied in Turkish.
He added: ‘Other passengers were starting to get disturbed, and some were taking recordings on their mobile phones.’
A police officer later explained that an elderly woman was crying and said ‘please don’t let me see her’.
A gentleman who approached her, meanwhile, said O’Donoghue had called him a ‘fat paedophile’.
He complained that the defendant had also recorded his six-month-old daughter.
Mr Franck said O’Donoghue had told the member of cabin crew to ‘stick’ tea that was offered to her and that she had then started to disturb passengers who were trying to sleep.
She shouted at the manager ‘I will have you’ and then used her mobile to film other passengers, putting her phone close to one of them and telling them they were ‘smelly.’
O’Donoghue, 45, of Grayswood Avenue, Coventry, who had previously admitted being drunk while entering an aircraft, was sentenced to a 12-month community order and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work
Following complaints, O’Donoghue was moved to another seat and was arrested when the plane landed.
Mr Franck said O’Donoghue had continued to shout and swear as she was led through immigration control and also in the police car as she was being taken to Solihull police station.
When interviewed. she accepted that she had drunk some of the alcohol and that it had ‘affected her more than it normally would’.
O’Donoghue, 45, of Grayswood Avenue, Coventry, who had previously admitted being drunk while entering an aircraft, was sentenced to a 12-month community order and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.
She was told by Recorder Patrick Upward QC: ‘You have upset a lot of people, people who are frightened enough getting on an aeroplane without idiots like you.’
