Woman in her 50s is fighting for her life after being hit by a cyclist who fled the scene to dump his bike a mile away

A woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a cyclist who fled the scene and ditched his bike a mile away.

The victim, believed to be in her 50s, was attempting to cross the road in east London when she was struck by the biker. 

A male cyclist stopped briefly but then fled, leaving the seriously injured woman in the street. 

Police found his bike abandoned around a mile away in Stoke Newington, an area popular with young professionals and cyclists.

Detectives are urging the man to come forward and want to hear from any witnesses in the area at the time. 

The incident happened on Tuesday just after 5pm with police called to Kingsland High Street in Dalston, Hackney.

A cyclist crashed into the pedestrian, a woman, believed to be in her 50s as she attempted to cross the road.

The victim was rushed to hospital where she remains with life-threatening injuries. Officers are currently trying to trace her next of kin.

A spokesman for the Met Police said in a statement: ‘The cyclist, a male, initially stopped due to coming of his bike, however, made off a few moments later.

‘The bike was later abandoned on Approach Close in Stoke Newington and it has been recovered by police.

‘At this stage there has been no arrests.’

Police hunt: Officers want to trace the cyclist and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward 

Road closures are in place and enquiries continue. CCTV footage is being reviewed by officers.

Detective Constable Darren Case, Serious Collisions Investigations Unit [SCIU] said: ‘This is a shocking incident as it appears the cyclist involved did not stop to assist the victim or contact the emergency services, instead making off.

‘We need to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time. Did you see the cyclist before, during or after the collision? Maybe you are in possession of dash cam footage or filmed the cyclist on your mobile phone as he made off, if you did it is vital that you make contact with us.

‘We are also appealing directly to the cyclist along with his friends and family who may know of his whereabouts, the pedestrian has suffered life threatening injuries as a result of this collision and it is important that you do the right thing and make contact with police.’
