A woman who “married” herself is still happily wed 11 years on.

Karen Reed always dreamed of being a bride but took matters into her own hands when she was still single at 40.

She spent around £800 on the solo wedding – splashing out on a dress, limo and a Champagne brunch for 16 guests.

Karen said: “I was nearing 40 and had been ready to settle down for a while. I thought, ‘Why not marry the person I love most in the world?’

“Not in a big-headed way, but I have learned to love and put myself first. It felt like the ultimate act of female empowerment.”

Her dad Brian, 80, walked her down the aisle and she read vows out to herself.

Karen has had a couple of relationships since the big day, but nothing serious enough to consider “divorce”. She had been single for a few years when she decided to get hitched to herself on May 1, 2010.

Karen’s family and friends were not keen on the idea at first but they soon came round to the idea.

She pulled out all the stops and planned a commitment ceremony that mirrored the usual legal wedding service.

Karen said: “I was getting older and wanted my dad to experience walking me down the aisle.

“Now my parents have the pictures from the day hung up in their house.”

Karen had six bridesmaids – one of whom was her daughter Evie, 21. Her friend Dr Gareth Thomas, 48, was the best man.

The short ceremony was followed by brunch at the posh Morgan Hotel in Swansea.

It featured toasts to the newlywed along with a speech from best man Gareth.

Karen, from Port Talbot, south Wales, remembered: “I got my hair done and wore a beautiful dress.

“We had photos outside of the hotel and must have had 100 people watching us – it was amazing.”

Since getting married to herself, the business owner has been in a couple of relationships but says there has been nothing serious.

And a decade later, she is still happily committed to herself.

Now 51, Karen said: “I know some people will think it’s a bit crazy, but I promise I’m not.

“It’s so important to love yourself and not settle for anything less than you deserve.

“It’s every girl’s dream to get married and have the perfect wedding day – which is exactly what I did.”
