World’s biggest heavy metal gathering rocks up as bands take to the stage and ghouls scare boozy festival goers – The Sun

MUSIC fans rock out at Wacken Open Air – the world's largest heavy metal festival.

These incredible pictures show face-painted rock lovers braving a muddy field in northern Germany to enjoy some hair-raising guitar music.

Wacken, located in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, first held the festival in 1990.

But while the inaugural event had around 800 customers – 2019 saw a sell-out crowd of around 70,000 people.

In the selection of colourful snaps, a fan is showing crowd-surfing during a performance by German metal band Powerwolf.

A crowd of revellers are also pictured taking a break from the music to watch two female actors play-fighting in a muddy cage.

The event ran from August 1 until Saturday August 3

Rock fans watched performances by the likes of  who played Hamatom, Opeth, Hammerfall, Demons & Wizards, Airbourne and legendary US band Slayer.
