MailOnline has discovered that Daniel Troger, 25, is the man alleged to have raped young Lena before going on to watch pornography with an 11-year-old boy, who later allegedly strangled the girl to death.

The boy cannot be identified for legal reasons, in a case that has rocked the country.

Troger is believed to have entered the residence through an open window at around 9pm on April 4, and was able to wander unchallenged through the facility.

And in a further development to the shocking case, MailOnline has learned that Lena’s body lay undiscovered for 12 hours after she was raped and killed.

And in a further development to the shocking case, MailOnline has learned that Lena’s body lay undiscovered for 12 hours after she was raped and killed in the facility (pictured)

The gifted young musician and swimmer had been taken away from her family amid allegations of abuse – only to be allegedly bullied by the 11-year-old boy who is believed to have strangled her to death.

She was found half-naked and unresponsive at the child and youth welfare facility – set on the outskirts of the picturesque Bavarian town of Wunsiedel – which houses around 90 children and is now the subject of a high-level probe by the authorities.

In a shocking combination of events, MailOnline has learned Troger is believed to have entered the facility at around 9pm on April 4 unchallenged.

On its website the St Josef Children’s Home says: ‘We are there for young people and their families who need help raising children.

‘It is particularly important to us to have a good, stable relationship with the children and young people who live with us. We see that showing them that you are valuable and okay the way you are, as a prerequisite for good development.’

But an investigative source told MailOnline: ‘How can it be possible that Lena was not found until the next morning?

‘How can a man get into the facility, which is supposed to be secure? The whole building should have been locked and no one should have been able to get in.

‘The man who broke in was able to climb in through a window, sexually attack the girl, leave and then to add to it all, she is murdered by another child inside…

‘Why was there no patrol? Where were the staff? Why was Lena not found until the next morning? These are questions that are all being looked at and need answering.’

MailOnline can also reveal the 11-year- boy, who German police say was responsible for the killing, is from the Nord-Westphalia area and has a history of violence.

And in a further shocking revelation, it has emerged Troger and the boy drank beer and watched pornography together at the home in the hours before Lena was attacked and then killed.

However, because the 11-year-old boy is below the age of criminal responsibility in Germany, which is 14, he will not be punished and he has since been moved to another facility elsewhere in the country.

Troger – who is married with two young children and married to wife Cassandra – has since been charged with rape, burglary and arson

The source added: ‘The boy’s history was well known, he had an issue with authority and had been violent in the past – placing him with other young children was perhaps not the best idea.’

In a statement sent to MailOnline the Catholic Youth Service of Regeneburg who run St Josef, said they were “extremely sorry” for Lena’s death.

They added:’Affected families, children and caregivers in St. Josef will continue to receive intensive support

‘The Catholic Youth Service crisis management team has discussed the results of the investigation and a member will continue to be available for the family of the girl.

‘The children and young people as well as the employees in the facility in Wunsiedel will continue to be accompanied and cared for.

‘The measures are being intensified as a precaution, since the publication of the public prosecutor and the police statements can again severely challenge everyone involved in coping with the events.

‘The crisis team has already taken precautions to be able to give all the necessary support to the children, young people and the caring professionals in the St. Josef youth welfare facility in Wunsiedel.

‘The children, the crisis team on site, the specialists and the facility management in St. Josef have already had to deal with extreme emotional stress.

‘The facility’s crisis team did an excellent job with a high level of professionalism in ensuring safety, stability and the return to normality in the lives of the children and indeed the entire facility.

‘Mourning for the ten-year-old girl and coping with grief had a firm place in trying to restore some normality.’

Staff at the facility refused to talk to MailOnline.

One said: ‘It’s very hard for us to speak. You have to understand this has upset all of us, the children and the staff, we are all shocked.

‘It’s the age of the children involved that has hit us hard and no one wants to talk about it because we just want to understand why it happened and make sure it doesn’t happen again.’

Authorities in nearby Regensburg, who are responsible for running the home, also declined to talk to MailOnline and simply said: ‘It would not be right to say anything. We are still looking into what happened.’

German police were able to identify the boy and Troger through fingerprint and DNA samples taken from the scene of the crime.

Troger – who is married with two young children and married to wife Cassandra – has since been charged with rape, burglary and arson.

He is suspected of having broken into five construction containers in the last year and stolen building machinery with more than £12,000.

On his now deleted Facebook page he describes himself as a ‘proud father’ and that ‘family is the most important thing in the world’, alongside pictures of him, his wife and children.

He worked as a rubbish collector in Wunsiedel and lived in nearby Thiersheim where locals remember him as a ‘loner’.

One neighbour said: ‘He didn’t really mix much with anyone. They moved here a few years ago from another part of Germany.

‘I know they have a child of around 18 months old and an older one, who is seven, as she is in the same year at school as my daughter. The wife and he must have had the children very young as she can’t be more than 25 years old.’

When MailOnline knocked on the pastel blue painted house close to the village football pitch, there was no answer, but a trampoline and swings were in the garden.

On her TikTok page Cassandra has posted videos of the children playing in the garden but there are no images of her husband.

Kader Catal, who went to school with Troger, told MailOnline: ‘I was shocked when I saw the news and it gave me goosebumps as I had known him when he was younger.

‘It left a deep impression on me because of what happened to the girl and because I know he has children of his own.

‘To be honest he was a loner when I knew him at school and also quite weird – I can’t believe that someone I knew and who has children himself did something like this.’

Former work colleagues of Troger at the Kufi waste management site on the outskirts of Wunsiedel were also tight lipped, but also suggested he was a loner.

One said: ‘We’ve been told not to speak about him or we could lose our jobs.

‘What can I say? He worked here for a few years and joined during the pandemic, he didn’t really stand out and didn’t really join in with us.

‘We were all shocked when we heard about what happened. All through Covid he was here and I saw on his Facebook he wrote ‘I’m working to keep you safe.’

‘The police came to ask us what we knew about him but no one could really help because he was a loner.’

A spokesperson for the local prosecutor said: ‘An eleven year old boy is suspected of murder and a 25-year-old man has been charged with rape, burglary and arson.

A police patrol car blocks off the road to the child and youth care centre in Wunsiedel in April

‘There is no evidence that the man participated in the murder of the ten-year-old girl but rather, the 11-year old boy killed the girl after the man had left the facility, after a dispute arose between the two.

‘Due to the boy’s criminal immaturity, no criminal proceedings can be carried out against him and he has been taken into the custody of responsible authorities.

‘The older man is still in custody and he has confessed during initial questioning.

‘Investigations into possible breaches of duty by the authorities responsible for the care of the children are still ongoing.’
