A man is so obsessed with Care Bears that he changed his name in tribute to the popular multi-coloured children's toys.

Nicholas Cherrywood, who picked a new first and second name in reference to a character from the 1985 The Care Bears film, has been given a Guinness World Record for his efforts.

In January he was recognised as having the largest collection of Care Bears memorabilia. His mind blowing stash is worth a staggering £120,000 and it includes exactly 1,234 items including books, movies, stationery, clothing and dozens of the teddys.

He found a love for the franchise during a stint in hospital when he was a little boy. And a paragraph in the new Guinness World Records 2024 book reads: “As a child, Nicholas used his bears to express himself, carrying Cheer Bear on good days or Bedtime Bear when he was tired.”

Nicholas, 27, is from Dallas, Texas, and he works as a makeup artist and model. He has since added more memorabilia to his home since his award and he recently spoke about it on Instagram.

One of his followers replied: “Omg you said you were trying to reach this goal years ago and here you are! Looking soooo fabulous as always. Love this and you.”

Another added: “Care Bear queen since forever. I saw some the other day and thought of you.”

A third said: “Mind blown. I thought I was the only person who still collects them.”

And another fan went with: “Man that’s a lot of Care Bears not going to lie.”

Meanwhile a fifth said: “What a dream. Congratulations. My husband and I are expecting our first child and her room is going to be covered with cloud shaped shelves filled with my Care Bears. Super excited.”

And talking about being celebrated for his colourful haul, he said: “The start of my Care Bear collection started when I was three. I was in the hospital for still to this day unknown [reasons]. But I did not speak for some reason and I was given Grumpy Bear just to comfort me but whenever I was upset I would like hold him up.

“Then they got me Cheer Bare which is a happier one and when I was most happy I would be holding that one and when I was sad I would be holding grumpy bear and it just started all of this.”

He proudly shares his name with villain Nicholas Cherrywood in The Care Bears movie who is taken over by an evil spirt before becoming evil himself.

The new Guinness World Records 2024 is now on sale.
