AN ENGLAND legend has been tipped to answer an \u201cSOS\u201d from the world's second oldest club and return to play at the age of 62.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Chris Waddle officially retired in 1999 and has since gone on to work as a pundit for the likes of BBC Radio Five Live, ESPN and Showsports Arabia after a brief stint as a manager.<\/p>\n


\n<\/p>\n

The Geordie winger made a name for himself at hometown club Newcastle United during the Eighties before a move to Tottenham Hotspur in 1985.<\/p>\n

Waddle continued to bamboozle defenders for both club and country and that secured him a big-money \u00a34.25m transfer to French club Marseille in 1989.<\/p>\n

After helping England to the semi-final of Italia 90, where he famously missed a penalty in the shoot-out defeat to West Germany, he returned to the UK in 1992.<\/p>\n

He signed for Sheffield Wednesday and played for them for four years before going on to have spells with a string of lower clubs until his retirement.<\/p>\n

Since hanging up his boots the veteran has briefly made a comeback in non-league for minnows such as Glapwell and Stocksbridge Park Steels.<\/p>\n

Then, a decade ago, the 62-capped Three Lions icon played a game for his local non-league team Hallam FC – the second oldest club on the planet.<\/p>\n

However, now a fresh report has claimed that Waddle may be about to turn out for the Northern Counties East League Premier Division outfit.<\/p>\n

Legendary Sheffield football journalist Alan Biggs broke the shock news on X, formerly known as Twitter.<\/p>\n

Hallam were recently forced to play with ten men due to injuries and were defeated by Stocksbridge Park Steels on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Afterwards he wrote on social media: \u201cUnderstand there is a strong possibility of Chris Waddle returning to semi-pro football two months short of his 63rd birthday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHallam FC will consider sending an SOS to the ex-Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sheffield Wednesday and England star amid a chronic run of injuries\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He then added: \u201cWaddle is a friend of Hallam FC (step nine in the pyramid) and it\u2019s believed will not need too much encouragement.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever really hung up his boots – Hallam have at least 6 players out with serious injuries. Had to play with 10 men after the latest tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sun Sport has contacted Hallam FC for comment.<\/p>\n

They are in action this weekend when they host Coventry United in the FA Vase on Saturday.<\/p>\n
