He said the ordeal has left him &#8216;absolutely broken&#8217; and he is now worried Becky might never return to her old self.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Broken is probably the best word for it,&#8217; said Chad.\u00a0&#8216;We have lost a massive part of what was supposed to be the best time in our lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/11\/77498931-12719889-image-a-23_1699355882565.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Becky Prout (pictured with baby Maya), from Doncaster, has been forced to give birth in a coma, just weeks after being diagnosed with a rare condition<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/12\/77498937-12719889-The_mum_bizarrely_developed_an_American_accent_before_being_diag-m-20_1699359602559.jpg\" height=\"552\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The mum bizarrely developed an American accent before being diagnosed with anti-NMDAR encephalitis &#8211; an autoimmune disorder known to cause a loss of cognition, memory loss, speech disorders and even seizures (Pictured: Becky on holiday in Gran Canaria while pregnant)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was so, so scary to see, because let alone being unwell, she was 27 weeks pregnant&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>For Becky, the nightmare began on the evening of July 22, when she was six months pregnant and her and Chad had just enjoyed dinner together at a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The couple had returned from a holiday in Gran Canaria, Spain, and went\u00a0<span>out for a meal at the Blue Orchid, a Thai restaurant, when she suddenly started acting strangely.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chad recalled the moment his sweetheart transformed into a completely different person and began speaking with an American accent \u2013 even though she had never visited the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Although strange within itself, it was only when he witnessed Becky sitting on the floor outside the restaurant commenting on how nice the rocks were, that he knew something was gravely wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Chad recalled: &#8216;All of a sudden, when she finished the meal \u2013 boom, she exploded into this American person.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She just turned American. And she isn\u2019t. She\u2019s from Doncaster, but her accent and personality, everything changed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/11\/77498933-12719889-image-a-25_1699355889396.jpg\" height=\"466\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Her partner Chad Maling (pictured), 30, said the ordeal has left him &#8216;absolutely broken&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/11\/77498945-12719889-image-a-26_1699355892942.jpg\" height=\"822\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>The hotel receptionist&#8217;s life has been warped since contracting the illness, to the extent that she was unconscious for the first month of daughter Maya&#8217;s life<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think she definitely got the American accent from TikTok, because a couple of weeks before, she was on it constantly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;It was like she had taken on a whole different personality&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Five days later, Becky&#8217;s condition spiralled as she suffered multiple major seizures, prompting emergency services to be called.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Medical staff who arrived on the scene immediately administered CPR, leaving Chad fearing he would lose both his partner and their unborn child.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She was rushed to Milton Keynes University Hospital where doctors advised she should stay overnight \u2013 but Becky, who was still acting strangely, refused and went home.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her condition plummeted yet again and Becky was transported back to hospital the same day, where she eventually remained for three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors placed her in a coma before ultimately deciding to carry out a C-section owing to complications her daughter was facing in the womb.<\/p>\n<p>It took doctors just three days to diagnose Becky with anti-NMDAR encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/11\/77498943-12719889-image-a-27_1699355896545.jpg\" height=\"845\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Chad revealed that while things are looking up, full recovery could take five years (Pictured: The family in hospital)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/11\/07\/11\/77498941-12719889-image-a-28_1699355899541.jpg\" height=\"1358\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Before Becky fell ill, the new dad was looking to set up his own plumbing business, but he has put his plans on ice while taking care of his daughter and supporting Becky<\/p>\n<p>A follow up MRI scan later revealed Becky had a cyst on one of her ovaries which doctors believe may have triggered her immune system, causing it to attack her brain &#8211; and eventually cause anti-NMDAR encephalitis.<\/p>\n<p>A surgeon removed the cyst and her condition began to improve &#8211; but Becky remained on life support.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Effectively, she died for a little bit while in there&#8217; remembered Chad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;They had to come in and do CPR and bring her back around.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The baby\u2019s bladder was actually blocked, so they had to drain a litre of fluid off a baby that weighed 4.10 lbs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;She was still in a coma unfortunately at this point, which is really, really sad&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>It was not until a month after giving birth that doctors were finally able to wake Becky up.<\/p>\n<p>She remained unconscious throughout the ordeal and remained so for the first month of her daughter\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>Chad added: &#8216;We were told by the neurologist that it\u2019s very, very rare to have it while you\u2019re pregnant and that there\u2019s only been like 30 cases reported in the world&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Fewer than 30 cases of pregnant women with anti-NMDAR encephalitis have been reported in the world, according to 2020 research published by the American Academy of Neurology.<\/p>\n<p>Chad revealed that while things are looking up, full recovery could take five years.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8216;She\u2019s slightly improving, but nowhere near as fast as what the doctors would like her to improve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I think yesterday was probably the first day in a long time, I\u2019ve actually had a conversation with her.
