A man tragically died after falling from a bathroom widow of a hotel in Cornwall while on holiday with his friends

Oliver Collier-Timpson, 25, died at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth in April of this year, after suffering what was described as a catastrophic traumatic brain injury consistent with a fall from height.

The ‘larger than life’ young man, from Cheshire, had enjoyed a pub crawl with friends around St Ives, before he entered the Harbour View House boutique hotel, a five-minute walk to the centre of town, and asked to use the toilet.

He was allowed in despite the hotel not normally letting members of the public enter. Oliver’s body was later found unresponsive at the rear of the property after his friends tracked his phone. Efforts were made to save him as he was airlifted to Derriford where he eventually passed away.

Giving evidence at the inquest into Oliver’s death, his mother Joanne Timpson said her son was ‘a larger than life character, gentle and very loving’. Joanne described 6ft 4in Oliver as a keen rugby player who loved being outside and walking.

She said: ‘He was very sociable and could chat to anyone. People would gravitate towards him and it was not uncommon for him to sit and talk to strangers on a night out.’

Joanne said her son was a straight A student from an academic background, and while he knew he was from a privileged background, he remained very down to earth and had done a lot of work helping the homeless.

Joanne told the hearing how her son got into teaching but was forced to take time off due to issues with his bowels that required bowel surgery. To deal with his health concerns, Oliver developed into a talented cook and took a keen interest in nutrition.

After his health for a time improved, Oliver’s bowel issues reappeared and his mother says he was ‘very depressed at the prospect of further surgery and medication’ and was developing signs of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Joanne said that Oliver must have been desperate to go into the hotel and ask to use the toilet. It was said that Oliver could have become lost at the back of the property.

Joanne stated that her son was very polite and there was no reason to suggest he’d fallen out with anyone. Even in his death Oliver has continued to help others by having his organs donated.

Joanne concluded by saying that her son touched many lives and that she took some comfort in knowing Oliver having a great day with his friends and brother before the awful accident.

Also giving evidence, Oliver’s friend Christopher Phillips said that Oliver disappeared on the evening in question, but it wasn’t out of character for him to walk off on nights out.

As concern grew, the friends tried to locate Oliver and he was eventually found unresponsive at the back of Harbour View House after they tracked his phone.

Christopher said there was nothing out of the ordinary about Oliver’s behaviour that day and that he was ‘happy to be on holiday’ and delighted at the prospect of seeing his brother. Another friend present, Marcus, said in a statement that ‘Oliver wasn’t one to do silly dares or stunts’.

Anthony Cornish, who runs Harbour View House, said that they allowed Oliver in and he later joined in the search for him. The toilet was found used and with the seat broken.

Concluding the inquest, assistant coroner for Cornwall Emma Hillson recorded a conclusion of misadventure before expressing her condolences to the family.
