So a few months ago, she sent me a recording of her laugh. She does not remember a day without her.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The family came back from their first long holiday as a family in 13 years just a week-and-a-half before Maya was killed.<\/p>\n<p>It was there, on a cruise ship touring Greece, that Maya told them about her plans to settle down with her boyfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Maya had told us on our trip to Greece that she had decided her boyfriend was going to be her husband,\u2019 Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She had decided they were going to have two kids, and they were going to have their own home.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018They were talking about the future. Dreaming about their future together.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79010023-12868967-image-a-51_1702657664684.jpg\" height=\"951\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Maya was close with her family, made up of herself, her parents, and her two sisters, 24-year-old Eliya and 18-year-old Halleli<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79010037-12868967-image-m-83_1702658755977.jpg\" height=\"702\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>More than 2,000 people attended Maya&#8217;s funeral in her hometown\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79010035-12868967-image-a-53_1702657671612.jpg\" height=\"420\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>She and her family lived in\u00a0in Zikhron Ya&#8217;akov, about 40 miles away from Tel Aviv<\/p>\n<p>None of that mattered to the gunmen who mowed her down on Black Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>After hearing missiles soar overhead, Maya called her parents, told them that she loved them, and that she, along with around 40 other festival attendees, had found a two-by-five-metre shelter that they all hid in.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0Top Biden official says &#8216;justice will come&#8217; to Yahya Sinwar because he has &#8216;American blood on his hands&#8217; and is holding hostages<\/h3>\n<p>Despite the calamity of the situation, Avi and Ayala said they weren\u2019t initially worried about the attack, as Israel has faced threats from Hamas rockets countless times.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In the beginning, I wasn&#8217;t afraid because I knew from past experiences with Maya that they [would] go into that shelter and they&#8217;re fine,\u2019 Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>But, Avi said, it was only when he saw confusing news reports referring to terrorists on paragliders that his heart sank.<\/p>\n<p>He immediately contacted his daughter: \u2018I just wrote to Maya, \u201cHey, be careful. Looks like there is a risk that terrorists are crossing the border. Instead, cramped, trapped and afraid, she and the 40 other festivalgoers in the small shelter watched in horror as Hamas terrorists began lighting tyres on fire and rolling them to the windows in an effort to smoke them out.<\/p>\n<p>They also threw grenades in the building, in case the smoke wasn\u2019t enough to draw them out.<\/p>\n<p>One by one, as they could bear the acrid stench of burning rubber no longer, they scrambled out of the shack, only to be mowed down by Hamas terrorists, waiting just feet away to pick civilians off with their guns as they fled for their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Maya\u2019s friend, who survived the Black Saturday attack, told her parents that the actress was shot to death around 20 metres from the door of the shelter.<\/p>\n<p>But her parents didn\u2019t know she had died for four agonising days.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We did not sleep, we did not eat,\u2019 Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We knew about the attack on Saturday morning. We got the announcement of her being dead on Wednesday around six o&#8217;clock in the evening.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79010025-12868967-image-a-55_1702657685017.jpg\" height=\"423\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>During Shiva, the family received hundreds of her friends, each of them devastated by her death<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011149-12868967-image-a-71_1702658507080.jpg\" height=\"637\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Held in her hometown, her funeral was attended by over 2,000 of her friends and family<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011151-12868967-image-a-72_1702658510678.jpg\" height=\"634\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was surprising. But you are never ready,\u2019 Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>Their other daughters were with them when they learned of Maya\u2019s murder. While Halleli stayed with them, Eliya left, unable to bear the news of the passing of her \u2018twin.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The family began preparations for Shiva, the Jewish customary seven-day mourning period that is normally only observed by the immediate members of a deceased person\u2019s family.<\/p>\n<p>But during Shiva, the family received hundreds of her friends, each of them devastated by the loss of someone who was, for almost all of them, a rock and a shoulder to cry on.<\/p>\n<p>Ayala said: \u2018Her friends and people who knew her described her as a magnet to people. She was a best friend to each one of them.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was surprising. We knew her, but we didn\u2019t know the magnitude of her relationships with so many friends. How she was like a psychologist for a lot of them. We didn&#8217;t know that,\u2019 Avi added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011155-12868967-image-a-73_1702658519947.jpg\" height=\"634\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>It took days for Israel to conduct its first investigation of the massacre at the Nova Festival<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011153-12868967-image-a-74_1702658524164.jpg\" height=\"759\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Maya&#8217;s body was left in the sun for four days as Israeli investigators worked out who had been killed<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011157-12868967-image-a-75_1702658525985.jpg\" height=\"634\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Per Jewish customs, she was not buried in a coffin or a casket, but was wrapped in a delicate, white cloth<\/p>\n<p>The funeral was an even bigger affair, and a chance to learn even more about the woman who, unbeknownst to them, had touched the lives of so many around her.<\/p>\n<h3>READ MORE:\u00a0 Palestinian man carries a body bag through waist-deep water as FLOODS wreak havoc across bomb-ravaged territory<\/h3>\n<p>Held in her hometown, it was attended by over 2,000, Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>She said when the cemetery\u2019s staff asked her how many they were expecting, she told them that roughly 200 would show up.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I did not realise how many people Maya knew, and for how many people she meant so much in life.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Avi said: \u2018We were shocked that they said so many things that we didn&#8217;t know about her. It was one after another, all her friends were talking there for about an hour.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I learned that for so many friends, she was the best friend, the one that they go to to get advice. They will miss her so much.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But that was little comfort when they laid their daughter to rest.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018To bury your child and to know that you&#8217;re never going to see her again. You&#8217;re never going to hear her laughter, feel her skin, feel her palms again,\u2019 Ayala said, trailing off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Worse was the state of her body. She was very, very tiny. But seeing the body inside the cloth, it was almost twice as big as what she should have been. It was horrible,\u2019 Ayala said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018If the four days before we were told that she was killed were the four longest days of my life, then this was the worst moment of my life,\u2019 Avi said.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, on November 26, was meant to be Maya\u2019s 26th birthday. The family held a memorial on the day, which they were determined not to be a sombre affair.<\/p>\n<p>They sent out invitations to celebrate Maya\u2019s life with them. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Puders\u2019 family home was packed to the rafters with those who loved her the most.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We anticipated thirty, but fifty showed up,\u2019 Ayala said with a faraway smile on her face.<\/p>\n<p>The dozens gathered at the home did what Maya loved most. They drank, they ate and they sang.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/15\/16\/79011163-12868967-image-m-81_1702658567114.jpg\" height=\"820\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Ayala said: \u2018Every day I wish that I would meet her just one more time. We sat and we talked about her, about them, about how life is now. They&#8217;ve lost a lot of friends during [Black Saturday]. And they&#8217;re still losing friends.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But as the flowers stopped coming, and the friends stopped visiting, the Puders had little else to do but mourn and think about what they would say to her if they had just a little more time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I just want to hug her twenty times a day and tell her \u201cWow, I\u2019m proud of you because you\u2019re such a special person\u201d. But I can\u2019t do it anymore,\u2019 Avi said, holding back tears.<\/p>\n<p>He said it took a friend telling him that he had done right by her for her entire life, weeks after she had died, for him to make any progress with his grief.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Someone told me \u201cyou gave her all the tools to grow up and to be herself\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So I feel okay with that, but I still want to hug her and kiss her and just tell her that I am proud.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ayala, meanwhile, said: \u2018Every day I wish that I would meet her just one more time. Just to tell her that I love her.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Maybe it&#8217;s something for us, as parents, to learn.
