Americans fume over ‘sexiest accents’ list as UK dialect ‘they never knew’ ranks

A pair of Americans are fuming at a recent list of the world's most attractive accent – with one particular Brit dialect baffling them.

In a recent survey of 1,000 Americans, it was found Australian's have the hottest dialect in the world. But New Yorkers and Frank Alvarez were less than happy at discovering their beloved city was at the bottom of the pile.

Frank, co-host of the Basement Yard podcast insisted: “The British did this – of course they're going to hate us we f***ing dipped on them, we left them at the altar…”

He then went on to read out the rankings of accents, several of which appeared to be quite new open him and co-host Joe Santagato, and he was outraged that his home town was considered the worst.

“I know we're biased, because we’re from New York … but people love New Yorkers because of the accent," Frank said. "People want to be seduced by a New Yorker.”

Frank and Joe agreed with the poll when it came to the choice for second-worst accent, which went to Boston, home of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The first British accent in the bottom 10 was Yorkshire, placed at number eight.

Frank characterised that as a typical “soccer hooligan UK” voice, and illustrated it with what might have been an attempt at Glaswegian.

Eighth on the most attractive list was the Birmingham accent, which stunned Frank. “Brummie? Don’t know what that is,” he said, and he similarly had no real clue what the seventh-most attractive accent, Welsh, might sound like.

“What the f** is Brummie?” Joe asked. “I sounds like English type of s***.”

There were a couple of European interlopers on the list next, with Italian and French making a good showing. “I don't know how people are attracted by French people at all,” Frank believed.

On being told that Irish had ranked at number four on the list, Joe asked: “Are we OK? The Irish? That’s an attractive language? I don't hate it but … you're not in the top five are you f*****g kidding me?”

London rated third, again with an impression from Frank that sounded a little like someone from the West Country who had just been hit in the head with a cricket bat.

He continued: “I do like London, but I think people are just confused because they think they're all smart while I've heard they're all dumb…”

Joe reacted to the news that Scottish accents rated a second place in the chart by crying out “Are we nuts?” Frank shared his opinion, saying the Scot's accents weren’t attractive, and they are “violent, if anything”.

“Scottish being number two is bananas,” laughed Joe. The pair were ambivalent about Aussie accents grabbing the top spot, with Frank claiming that the Australian twang is ”just like a cool London”.
