Storm Ciarán: Yellow wind and rain warning issued
New “danger to life” warnings have been issued as Storm Ciarán is just hours away from bringing more chaos to Britain.
The amber weather warnings for Northern Ireland are in place for all of tonight.
Meanwhile the south coast of England is likely to see gusts of wind as strong as 80mph – while even inland areas will be hit with strong winds reaching 50 to 60 mph.
The winds will be accompanied by heavy rain, particularly on higher ground areas.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Chris Almond, said: “Winds associated with Storm Ciarán are likely to gust to 80mph along the south coast of England, with a small risk of somewhere exposed seeing 90mph, and winds could even gust up to 50 or 60 mph further inland.

“This deep low-pressure system will also bring heavy rain to much of the UK, but the heaviest rain is expected in southern and western areas with 20 to 25mm quite widely across the region but up to 40 to 60mm potentially over higher ground.”
He added that there is a risk of “further impacts” due to rain falling onto “already saturated ground”.
The ground of eastern Scotland and parts of north east England are already soaked from Storm Babet, which only ceased a week ago.
The rain will therefore particularly affect areas “already struggling to clean up from the heavy rainfall we have seen over the last week or so.”
Meanwhile Northern Ireland will be hit with further rain during Monday evening and overnight.
This includes 25-50mm of rain falling generally, with 75 to 100mm on higher areas – much of it falling on already saturated ground.
The Met Office’s amber warnings suggest a “danger to life” is possible for southern parts of Northern Ireland, including Belfast.
They also predict “extensive flooding of homes and businesses”, and even the possibility of “building collapse”.
Power cuts and disruption to transport is also likely, with some communities potentially to be “cut off by floodwater, perhaps for several days.”

A yellow weather warning is also in place for the whole of Northern Ireland from 9pm this evening to 9am tomorrow, predicting further heavy rain.
As the week goes on, further weather warnings are in place for other areas of the UK.
Warnings for rain and wind are in place for the south coasts of England and Wales – the former from 6pm on Wednesday to 11.59pm on Thursday, the latter from 9pm on Wednesday until the same time.
And then later in the week a warning for rain is in place in northeast England, including Leeds, York, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne.
