HOW do you eat your toast? If your answer is by layering on butter or jam, before taking a big bite, you’re not alone.
But now an etiquette expert has warned that you’ve been eating the much-loved food item in the wrong way – and it’s making you look common.
William Hanson – a British etiquette coach – revealed he’d seen people eating the breakfast item wrong for years.
And it didn’t take long for him to put them right, as he showed the right and “proper” technique.
William, who has been on shows including This Morning, explained: “Here’s the upmarket way to eat toast – you’ve probably been doing it wrong.”
He then took a slice of thick cut toast and pretended to cover it in his chosen topping – spreading his knife over the whole piece of bread.

He continued: “We don’t take the butter and jam and slather the entire slice of bread and eat like so – very common.”
Instead, the expert went on to reveal his preferred technique and how you can follow in his footsteps.
Against the backdrop of a busy restaurant, William explained: “Instead, we break a bite-sized piece of the toast off.”
Once he had done so, he placed a thin layer of butter on the toast, before popping it delicately into his mouth.
