A groom’s cruel trick on his bride during their wedding vows has sparked a firestorm of criticism, with one person slamming the ‘prank’ as ‘public humiliation.’

Life coach Shawnda, from Atlanta, Georgia, recently uploaded a clip of an unnamed couple standing at the altar together when the man appeared to try and play a joke on his soon-to-be wife before it went terribly wrong.

In the video, the groom was told it was time for him to read his vows and he explained that he had written them down on a piece of paper.

He then pulled a note out of his suit pocket and unfolded it as his bride adoringly watched on, with her excitement to hear what he was going to say clearly written all over her face.

But when she discovered that the paper actually had the words ‘help me’ sprawled in big letters across the back, she appears to be completely mortified.

He acted like he was preparing to read his vows from the paper and held the message up to the crowd.

A few people in the audience erupted in laughter — including the person recording — as they read the sign, while the rest sat in awkward silence.

The bride’s expression immediately went from loving to furious. She hit the groom’s arms with her flower bouquet, as he told her: ‘I’m only kidding, it’s a joke.’

‘It’s not funny,’ she began to respond before the video cut off.

Shawnda had a lot to say about the tacky moment, explaining that she has ‘no respect’ for the ‘kind of man’ who would ‘humiliate’ his bride on her special day to try to ‘get a cheap laugh.’

‘I have no respect for the kind of man that takes that day, that opportunity, to get themselves a cheap laugh,’ she said. 

‘It’s not the time for jokes. A “help me” sign like she’s holding you hostage? The crowd was dry.

‘It wasn’t even worth it, the juice wasn’t even worth the squeeze. You humiliated this woman for what? So the one woman holding the camera could give a little laugh?’ 

In the caption of her video, which got more than 852,000 views, she asked: ‘Was this a harmless prank or public humiliation?’

‘Her face… She was crushed,’ one person wrote. Another added, ‘She was so excited to hear those vows too.’ 

‘The way the bride is genuinely excited to hear what he has to say until she realizes,’ someone else said alongside a crying emoji. 

‘I would’ve walked out,’ a fourth comment read. A fifth added: ‘Why do these people beg for a girl to go out with them, cry if she tries to leave, propose to her, spend a tons of money on a wedding then do this?’

‘I would leave him at the altar and see who gets the real humiliation. Real love = respect,’ a different user commented. 

‘She most likely spent months planning every second of that day, and the only thing he put any effort in to was *THAT*,’ another person said.

‘Maybe the camera woman should marry him if she thinks he’s so funny,’ someone else joked. 

‘To spend all that money and your life dreaming of that moment to have your partner proclaim their love for you on YOUR DAY just to have him do this is sad,’ another comment read.

Some people, however, wondered if it was all a ‘skit’ or if it had been faked for views, but others insisted it couldn’t have been based off of the bride’s reaction, as well as the officiant’s horrified expression.

‘The officiant’s face says it all. As a man he just looks so disappointed and embarrassed, and worried for the woman,’ one commenter insisted.
