M60 traffic chaos as Storm Pia overturns lorry – drivers at standstill

Storm Pia has caused travel chaos on the M60 this morning after its gale-force winds overturned a lorry on the major traffic artery. North West Motorway Police have closed the M60 at Barton Bridge both ways at junction 10 after the “large-sided vehicle has blown over in high winds”.

Long delays lead up to the closed section, complicating travel for people making early trips ahead of Christmas. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) the service urged people to avoid the area and “not travel unless essential”.

In an earlier post, police asked people to consider if their journey was “really essential” and, if not, to “consider delaying it for a day”.

Pia storm has hit the UK with 80mph winds, with Met Office warnings kicking in from 12am and remaining active until 9pm today. The Met Office has warned that, alongside travel difficulties, people can expect some short-term loss of power and other services.
