A doctor has revealed why she refuses to cook with non-stick pans – despite them being the most convenient option.
Dr Poonam Desai, a US-based GP, says she usually opts for cast iron and stainless steel pans when cooking because her family’s health is her priority.
‘Scratched or chipped, nonstick cooking pans, can leech millions of micro plastics into our food. Microplastics our endocrine disruptors,’ she wrote alongside an explanatory video on Instagram.
‘They can cause hormone imbalances, fertility issues and even increase our risk of cancer,’ she said.

She also avoids using scratched ceramic pans.
‘Ceramic pans usually have a layer of aluminum underneath and it can leech into our foods,’ she added.
The popular doctor, who is mother to a toddler, says if people have scratched non-stick or aluminum-based ceramic pans at home they should throw them out.
And people were quick to comment on the video, asking about copper pans, and ceramic pans marketed as ‘non-toxic’.
While others thanked her for her advice.
‘I threw out all these pans long ago. Please watch her and do the same! Cast iron for the win,’ one woman wrote.
Some people appeared furious with the doctor for sharing her opinion.
‘My god I’m so tired of seeing video after video that is basically telling every thing I’m doing in my life is just killing me or causing cancer or making me fertile… I literally might as well go die right now this is getting too annoying,’ one man said.

‘Don’t just listen to someone just because they start by saying, I’m a doctor,’ grilled another.
‘Sounds like classic fearmongering to me,’ added a third.
